What is a
support worker?

As a Support Worker at Brandon Trust, you’ll be part of something meaningful—supporting autistic people and people with learning disabilities to live life in the way that suits them best. Whether it’s helping someone pursue a new hobby, build routines, plan a trip, attend their work, maintain their house or simply enjoy their day, you’ll be working alongside them to make it happen.

Support Workers are there for the moments that make up daily life. You might be cooking a favourite meal, helping with shopping, or supporting someone to keep on top of their health needs. You’ll also help with personal care, like washing or dressing, always with respect and centred on the person’s needs.

No two days are ever the same. One day could be planning a trip to the seaside, another might be building new routines or enjoying hobbies together. Whatever the activity, you’ll be working alongside people to make sure life feels fulfilling and their goals are within reach.

You don’t need years of experience to succeed. The most important skills are human ones. At Brandon Trust, our Support Workers are:
  • Kind, thoughtful, and rooted in empathy
  • Respectful of each person’s individuality and choices
  • Good listeners and clear communicators
  • Positive team players, willing to learn and grow
  • Committed to inclusion and celebrating what makes people unique
These qualities are what make Support Workers effective and trusted in the lives of the people they support.
Alongside everyday support, Support Workers have responsibilities that ensure people’s wellbeing and progress. These include:
  • Promoting independence and encouraging skill building
  • Supporting health needs, including medication and appointments
  • Helping people feel safe at home and in the community
  • Providing emotional support, building confidence, and being a trusted listener
  • Keeping accurate records to monitor progress and quality of care
  • Working closely with colleagues, families, and professionals to provide joined up support
These responsibilities make sure the support you provide is consistent, safe, and person centred.

You don’t need formal qualifications or professional care experience to join Brandon Trust. What matters most is your attitude, values, and commitment to treating people with respect.

Experience is welcomed but not essential. Many Support Workers have cared for relatives, siblings, or friends, and those personal experiences are just as valuable as paid roles. If you bring empathy, patience, and a genuine desire to support people, we’ll provide full training, ongoing support, and opportunities to grow your skills and career

Being a Support Worker is more than a job. It’s a chance to be part of someone’s journey. You’ll see people grow in confidence, achieve personal goals, and enjoy everyday moments that matter. The impact is real and rewarding.

At Brandon Trust, you’ll also be part of a supportive team that values respect, individuality, and connection. With full training, guidance, and development opportunities, you’ll be supported every step of the way. This is purposeful work where you’ll make a difference and feel the difference too.
